Happy Thanksgiving from Istanbul

Or in Turkish "Skran gnn kutlu olsun!"

For Americans, today is a time for feasting and celebrating with friends and family members.

We give thanks for everything that we are blessed with in our lives. People tell stories. We make new memories. Today is Thanksgiving Day.

Although today is just another normal day in Istanbul, our place is anything but normal. Our living room has been converted to accommodate extra tables and chairs for tonight's dinner. Our kitchen is stacked full of ingredients, pans full of toasted bread cubes for stuffing, desserts on the side and dishes galore to clean. Napkins need to be ironed and the table needs to be set with plates and wine glasses. (Maybe I'll save this job for hubby later after work.)
Thanksgiving Day desserts: American pecan-bourbon tart, apple-frangipane tart and pumpkin tart with whipped cream.
Tonight, we will celebrate this traditional American holiday with our expat and Turkish friends just like we have the previous two years here. Our friends call it the "event of the year." I'm happy to share it with them.

It doesn't matter where you are in the world. What matters is having the people you love close to you.

And now my friends, I must get back in the kitchen.

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!
